In 1938 Sample purchased two square miles of mangrove marshes and swamp land for $13,700. Influenced heavily by Jamaica's own village of Port Royal and her pirate past, he began wet-dredging his swamp to create lands and waterways that are up to 40 feet deep in areas. Sample's affection for the pirates that once traveled the waters in the 17th century is evident in his streets names: Rum Row, Treasure Lane, Gin lane, Galleon Drive, etc.
